Reflexology

How does reflexology work?

Have you ever touched a scalding hot surface accidentally and instantly removed your hand before your mind even registered the burn? That was a reflex action taking place within your central nervous system. It is a natural protective measure your body takes to avoid harm – in this case, a very hot external stimulus!

Reflexology works on the same principle: the therapist provides the external stimulus to the feet using specific thumb techniques to elicit an automatic bodily response. By ‘mapping’ the feet, a qualified therapist can pinpoint blockages and problematic areas associated with every organ, gland and system within the body. Once these blockages are established, the therapist works gently with the body’s natural rhythm and healing process to encourage and guide it in the removal of toxins, deposits and waste build-up that can hinder bodily functions.

Benefits of Reflexology

Reflexology will always be of equal benefit to the mind and body; however, below are just a few of the endless benefits a client will usually experience after just a few sessions:

  1. Stress/tension reduction
  2. Bowel function improved
  3. Deeper sleep with less disturbances
  4. Hormone regulation
  5. Increased circulation
  6. Improved mood
  7. Boosted energy levels
  8. Pain reduction
  9. Stronger immune system

Holistic Approach

Reflexology works to heal the client as a ‘whole’, and does not treat symptoms or conditions in isolation. It is a holistic and natural therapy which works on the physical, emotional and energy levels. It is generally recognised that a growing percentage of society are now living in a chronic stressed state – be that from emotional, physical or chemical stressors.

Stress from work, financial, family pressures; chemicals added to food, and in the products we use daily; long hours sitting at desks or excessive screen time, all wreak havoc with our natural circadian rhythm and can be devastating to our biological processes (metabolic rate, hormone production and regulation, cellular functions, immune system response). Regular reflexology sessions can work to reverse these negative effects and helps to restore homeostasis within the body – guiding you out of a ‘fight-or-flight’ dominant state, towards balance, a sense of inner peace and well-being.

What to Expect from a Treatment

After the first treatment a deep sense of calm and relaxation is usually felt by the client as tension within the body has been released. It is common to expect to have a great nights sleep afterwards and to wake up the following morning feeling refreshed and energised. It is recommended that a client commit to at least 6 weekly therapy sessions to produce the most effective results as this time allows for hormone regulation, toxin removal and cleansing to take place.

Occasionally, less than desirable results can temporarily be felt post-treatment (1-3 days). These can include: headaches, tiredness, disturbed sleep, increased mucus production and expulsion or increased waste elimination. These reactions are self-limiting and a positive sign the body is working hard to remove built-up toxins and waste. More about treatment guidelines and contraindications can be found in the information section.
